The first national university in the Caucasus was opened in 1918, which laid the foundation for the European type of high school in Georgia.

The idea of establishing a university in Georgia was born in the early 19th century with the strengthening of the struggle against the Russian empire. In the sixties of the 19th century, a new generation emerged in Georgia, led by the great Georgian public figure Ilia Chavchavadze, which is connected to the new stage of spiritual revival in the history of our country. In these years the struggle for the establishment of the university was particularly active.

The real possibilities of creating a high school were further revealed after the foundation was established in Tbilisi. It was the only one among the banks in the Russian Empire, which used its revenues for cultural, educational and economic interests of the nation.

From the beginning of the 20th century, Ivane Javakhishvili, a pediatrician and a professor of St. Petersburg, became an organizer of the establishment of Georgian University . From the first days of February 1917, Ivane Javakhishvili, who was in St. Petersburg, started actively preparing for the opening of the higher education institution.

The first meeting of the founders of the university was held in Petre Melikishvili’s apartment in Tbilisi on May 12 . The meeting was led by Ekvtime Takaishvili. This day was founded by the Georgian Free University, which has played a major role in establishing the university.

In the autumn of 1917, the founders of the university founders were expanded to open higher education institutions. It was decided to initially establish only the Faculty of Wisdom, which would unite humanitarian fields, as well as the nature and mathematics. At the end of December the press has already announced a statement on the students’ reception at the Georgian University.

The first national university in the Caucasus was opened on January 26, 1918 (New Style, February 8), on the day of David Aghmashenebeli. As Ivane Javakhishvili, Ivane Javakhishvili has been elected as the first Rector of the Faculty Council of the Professors, and Ivane Javakhishvili himself is the head of the Faculty of Wisdom.
